The members of First Presbyterian Church have a variety of gifts, but are united in their desire to serve God and neighbor through participation in church mission. The goal of the mission program has been to find creative ways to link members’ gifts to the work of the church. For example:
Every Saturday from mid-July through October church members staff a stand at our local Farmer's Market. They sell produce and baked goods donated by church members. Proceeds are given to the Presbyterian Hunger Program (a denomination-wide effort to fight hunger). Staffing the stand is a great way to spend a Saturday morning and gardeners and bakers take pride in donating their best efforts to this mission. Thursday afternoons we serve a full dinner to the hungry and lonely in Fellowship Hall. In partnership with five other local congregations, First Presbyterian hosts this ministry of compassion. Volunteers serve as cooks, servers, dessert providers, dish washers, and van drivers.
Volunteers at Hope Tutoring Center work one-on-one with students to achieve success in school. Tutors help students complete homework and develop study skills. Many of our youth and adults find that establishing a relationship and encouraging the potential of a young person are meaningful forms of ministry.
Rebuilding Together helps low-income homeowners maintain their homes. A founding partner of the organization, First Presbyterian Church sponsors a home for repair in May or June. Members contribute financial support, materials and labor for home repairs.
The Church holds regular mission trips. Every spring and fall church members spend a weekend at our Presbytery’s church camps upgrading the facilities. We also send teams to Mexico for a week of construction work and Vacation Bible School. Mission trips are life-changing experiences for participants.
We field three teams at our local Relay for Life event and raise between $3000-$4000 for the American Cancer Society. In addition to the people who walk, the music program raises funds with its Broadway Night Event, we offer a flamingo flock from April Fool’s Day through the Relay for a small donation, and hold spring and fall pie sales.
Our newest venture provides art classes for Middle School Youth. Teachers design and offer a variety of classes, concluding with an art show or performance. Below are the 1,000 Peace Cranes that fly above our 3rd Avenue entrance, a project of the Academy.
